Trip Description

Uncover the many faces of this winegrowing gem which glistens above the coastal city of Adelaide.

Following an introduction to the region which starts at the very summit, guests will spend a full day being immersed in the Adelaide Hills’ shining crown jewel of Chardonnay. Then, on the second day, be taken across the hills to explore other interesting facets: the diversity of landscapes; classic versus emerging varietals; and different winemaking philosophies.

Over the itinerary, our guests will delve into these key aspects of the region:

  • The two sub-region GIs of Piccadilly Valley and Lenswood;
  • The vast array of exposures and altitudes, the cool climate, the wide range of soils, and the biodiverse environment;
  • The region’s evolution over nearly 50 years since the planting of the Tiers Vineyard by Brian Croser;
  • How and why Chardonnay has become the Hills’ star varietal, including a Masterclass benchmarking tasting; and
  • How the Adelaide Hills maintains its mantle as an incubator for dynamism, experimentation, and innovative wine expression

The growers and winemakers of the Adelaide Hills look forward to welcoming you on this immersive visit expertly hosted by local Master of Wine, David Le Mire.

About the Region

Cool. Artisanal. Diverse. Creative.

COOL. Adelaide Hills is the premier cool-climate region of South Australia, stretching across the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east of Adelaide. The region is defined by its high altitude – rising from 300m to 700m – which ensures ideal cool conditions for premium grape production.

ARTISANAL. The Adelaide Hills’ grape crush is small and high quality. Tiny vineyards are dotted among its twisting valleys and slopes, each capturing the light differently. Likewise, many of the wineries are small and artisanal – crafting a handful of wines that perfectly reflect a specific terroir. Sustainable practices are focused on small-scale farming and lower cropping in the steep undulating terrain, as well as the protection and regeneration of natural biodiversity.

DIVERSE. The Adelaide Hills’ varied topography, micro-climates and winemaking philosophies yields a great diversity of wine styles. The common element is that they are elegant and textured, with excellent purity of fruit, and the acid structure to age and evolve gracefully.

CREATIVE. Being a young wine region since the 1970s, the region is not bound by tradition, nor can it rely on historical accolades. Growers have forged their reputation by being creative, adventurous and a deeply held belief in the potential of the region to make world-class wines.

Today this vision is a reality, with the sustainable cool climate wines made here capturing the exceptional beauty and diversity of the region.
